The Edgewater Resilience Fund: What It Is and Why It Matters
Another major topic shaping the year ahead is the Edgewater Resilience Fund, an ordinance currently being advanced by Damian Pardo and scheduled to be heard at the City of Miami Commission meeting on January 8th.
This proposed ordinance is the result of months of conversations with Edgewater residents and property owners, and it is designed to address long-standing needs in our neighborhood through a more structured, community-focused approach to development contributions.
What Is the Edgewater Resilience Fund?
At its core, the Edgewater Resilience Fund is intended to unlock funding specifically for Edgewater by creating a local mechanism that allows development contributions to be reinvested directly into the neighborhood.
The goals of the fund include:
- Supporting infrastructure improvements
- Creating homeownership opportunities
- Delivering public benefits that directly serve Edgewater residents
- Strengthening neighborhood resilience and long-term planning
Importantly, this ordinance does not change or increase density limits in the City of Miami. The density levels referenced already exist in the City’s Comprehensive Plan and have been in place since 2017. Developers can already access these limits today through existing programs.
What this ordinance does differently is create a structured, transparent path that ensures contributions are directed back into the Edgewater community rather than bypassing it entirely.
Without this framework, developers could instead rely on state-level programs that allow even higher density without providing localized community benefits.
Staying Informed Ahead of the Vote
To help residents better understand the ordinance and ask questions ahead of the January 8th commission meeting, Commissioner Pardo’s office will be hosting a community Zoom meeting on January 6th.
This meeting will:
- Provide a clear explanation of the ordinance
- Address common questions and misconceptions
- Offer residents an opportunity to engage before the item goes before the Commission
