Major Traffic & Infrastructure Update
I-395 Signature Bridge, I-95 Improvements & Edgewater Development Impacts
Edgewater and the surrounding Midtown corridor continue to experience significant infrastructure transformation. Between the ongoing I-395 / SR 836 / I-95 Design-Build Project led by FDOT and multiple private developments advancing through the county process, residents should expect both progress and periodic traffic impacts over the coming months and years.
Here is a comprehensive breakdown of what’s happening — and what it means for our community.
The I-395 / SR 836 / I-95 Project: A Regional Game Changer
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), in partnership with the Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX), continues work on the transformative $866 million reconstruction of the I-395, SR 836, and I-95 interchange.
Construction limits include:
- SR 836 from NW 17 Avenue through the Midtown Interchange to the MacArthur Causeway
- I-95 from NW 8 Street to NW 29 Street
The project is currently scheduled for completion in late 2029, though timelines may shift due to weather or unforeseen conditions.
Signature Bridge Progress
The Signature Bridge — which will become one of Miami’s most recognizable infrastructure landmarks — has reached several key milestones:
Recently Completed
- Closure of three of six signature bridge arches
- Major concrete pour at the foundation west of NE 2 Avenue
- Dewatering and pile chipping east of Biscayne Boulevard
Ongoing Work
- Installation of 90-ton arch segments over Biscayne Boulevard
- Construction of the westbound signature bridge deck
- Foundation work for additional arches
- Erection of precast roadway segments for the new higher-capacity I-395 mainline
Looking Ahead
- Completion of the fourth arch erection: 2nd Quarter 2026
- Opening of new westbound I-395 ramp to southbound I-95: 3rd Quarter 2026
- Opening of an additional lane on the southbound I-95 ramp to eastbound I-395: 3rd Quarter 2026
Traffic Impacts in the I-395 Corridor
Residents near Biscayne Boulevard and North Bayshore Drive should anticipate intermittent disruptions due to drainage enhancements and structural installations.
Nighttime Closures
- All lanes on Biscayne Boulevard (NE 14 St to NE 11 Terrace)
- NE 13 Street (N Bayshore Dr to NE 2 Ave)
- Southbound North Bayshore Drive (NE 14 St to NE 13 St)
Periodic Day & Night Closures
- Biscayne Boulevard
- NE 13 Street
- NE 1 Avenue
- NE 2 Avenue(As construction phases require)
These closures are essential for drainage upgrades and structural bridge work.
I-95 Corridor Improvements
In addition to the Signature Bridge work, improvements are underway on I-95:
Ongoing Construction
- Overhead bridge work for the new westbound I-395 ramp to southbound I-95
- Pavement replacement on southbound I-95 from NW 17 Street to NW 8 Street
Expected Traffic Impacts
- Nighttime lane closures northbound and southbound
- Periodic full closures between NW 8 Street and NW 17 Street
- Ramp closures as needed for overhead work
SR 836 Double-Deck Construction
On SR 836, crews are building foundations, piers, and pier caps between I-95 and NW 12 Avenue while installing beams and placing concrete for the new double-decked roadway.
Expected Impacts
- Nighttime full closures eastbound and westbound
- Day and night arterial closures on NW 17 Ave, NW 12 Ave, NW 7 Ave, and surrounding roads

Miami-Dade Development & Traffic Mitigation in Edgewater/Wynwood
In parallel with regional highway improvements, several private developments in and around Edgewater and Wynwood are advancing through the county’s review process.
While not all projects require offsite improvements, several include targeted traffic mitigation strategies:
Key Traffic Improvements Proposed or Required
- New traffic signals and signal retiming at NW 29 Street intersections
- Installation of a mid-block crosswalk on NE 27 Street
- Exclusive left-turn lanes at NE 29 Street intersections with NE 2 Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard
- Proposed right-turn-only restrictions at NE 20 Street / NE 2 Avenue
- Enhanced crosswalk with rectangular rapid flashing beacon at NE 22 Street & N Miami Avenue
- Exclusive right-turn lane additions into certain project driveways
These improvements aim to manage additional vehicle volume created by mixed-use and residential growth.
NE 2 Avenue Redesign (On Hold)
The County’s Highways Division is working on a redesign of NE 2 Avenue from NE 20 Street to NE 36 Street.
Planned elements include:
- Maintaining a 30 MPH design speed
- Dedicated bike lanes
- Two-foot protective barriers
This project is currently on hold, with no estimated completion timeline.
Multiway Stop Installations (Completed)
To enhance neighborhood safety, new multiway stops have been installed at:
- NE 4 Avenue & NE 18 Street
- North Bayshore Drive & NE 20 Terrace
- NE 18 Street & North Bayshore Drive
These installations are intended to improve pedestrian safety and slow traffic in residential corridors.
What This Means for Edgewater Residents
We are living through one of the most significant infrastructure transitions in the history of our neighborhood. The combination of:
- Regional expressway reconstruction
- The Signature Bridge development
- I-95 improvements
- New mixed-use projects
- Localized safety enhancements
…means short-term inconvenience but long-term capacity, safety, and connectivity improvements.
The Biscayne Neighborhoods Association will continue monitoring closures, advocating for coordination, and keeping residents informed.
