Traffic, Safety & Mobility Improvements Are Underway

Traffic and safety remain top priorities for Edgewater, and the BNA continues to lead conversations with Miami-Dade County, the City of Miami, and FDOT to bring solutions to our neighborhood. While these processes take time, several improvements are already underway, with more planned in the coming months.

Ongoing Traffic Studies

A number of new developments in and around Edgewater are currently undergoing traffic analysis. These studies help determine whether nearby intersections need new crosswalks, traffic lights, turn lanes, or safety features. Projects under review include:

  • Mikado Tower (NE 17 Terrace) – 503 units
  • 29th Street residential/retail project – 96 units
  • The Arts (NE 1st Ave) – 576 units + retail
  • Auto sale/repair facility – 190,000 sq ft
  • 3350 Biscayne Blvd
  • 45 NE 16th Street

As each study is completed, the BNA will share the official determinations with residents.

Traffic Studies Already Completed

Several nearby projects have already finished their traffic requirements, and safety recommendations have been issued. These include:

  • Residence 27 (NE 2nd Ave) – 247 units
  • 1550 NE Miami Place – 427 units
  • Habitus Edgewater – 61-unit hotel
  • 1600 NE 2nd Ave – 282 units
  • 401 NE 29th Street – 324 units + commercial

These reviews help ensure that new development contributes to necessary transportation upgrades.

New Traffic Improvements Coming Through Development

As a condition of approval, upcoming developments must pay for or build several traffic and pedestrian improvements, such as:

  • A new traffic signal at NW 29 St & NW 1 Ave
  • A new mid-block crosswalk on NE 27 St
  • New dedicated left-turn lanes at NE 29 St & Biscayne Blvd
  • Right-turn-only restrictions and safer geometry near NE 20 St
  • New pedestrian beacons (RRFBs) near NE 22 St

These improvements are aimed at easing congestion and making streets safer for everyone.

County Projects That Impact Edgewater

The County plans to redesign NE 2nd Avenue (NE 20 St to NE 36 St) with dedicated bike lanes and major safety upgrades. Re-advertising is planned for 2026 with construction expected in 2027.

Additional pedestrian projects — including more RRFB crossings — are proposed but currently unfunded.

Recent Safety Enhancements Already in Place

The City’s Transportation Engineering Division recently installed new all-way stop intersections at:

  • NE 4 Ave & NE 18 St
  • N. Bayshore Dr & NE 20 Terrace
  • NE 18 St & N. Bayshore Dr

These upgrades provide immediate safety improvements for pedestrians and drivers.

Bottom Line: Progress Is Happening

Traffic relief takes time, but the combination of new studies, development-driven improvements, and County/City-led upgrades means real changes are on the way. The BNA will continue pressing every agency involved to prioritize Edgewater and accelerate the improvements our neighborhood needs
